OpenDNS filtering is based on the registration of your the IP address of your network. Whenever the OpenDNS server receive any traffic from that IP address(es), your web filtering policy is applied. The DNS updater is used to keep the OpenDNS network settings up to date with any changes to your dynamic IP address.
My only "complaint" is a couple of times the OpenDNS servers were down. Even though I had the radio button checked for "Obtain an IP address automatically" (in TCP/IP Properties dialog box), I wasn't able to access the internet until I removed the OpenDNS Preferred and Alternate DNS Server addresses.
